A Life Story Told in Her Own Words

I recently discovered something about myself that made me laugh: apparently, Google has already given me a professional title that I did not even know I had.

I never personally created a formal biography online. I do not remember submitting my complete career history to Google or deliberately building an online profile. Yet somehow, when my names are searched, parts of my past work in dance, choreography, television, film, and stunt performance appear.

It is both surprising and funny because there are many things about my career that even I had already forgotten.

For most of my entertainment work, I used the name Angela Abaya. My real name is Doll Berdin, although I also used other names depending on the project, production, or opportunity. I changed screen names several times, but somehow, Google still managed to connect Angela Abaya with Doll Berdin.

It made me look back and realize just how much I had done.

My journey was never carefully planned. I did not begin with the goal of becoming famous or earning a title. I simply loved performing, accepted the opportunities that came to me, and worked as hard as I could.

My professional journey started through dance.

In early 2008, I became one of the dance choreographers for promotional events connected with Watsons at SM. I shared choreography responsibilities, helped prepare performances, and worked with other dancers for mall events and promotional activities.

At that time, I did not think of these projects as part of one long career story. They felt like separate experiences.

I did not realize that some of them had apparently been recorded, listed, or associated with my name online.

To me, I was simply working whenever work became available.

The Unexpected Road to Stunt Work

My involvement in television stunts happened almost by accident.

A friend and I joined the group of Tatay Val for what we initially expected to be ordinary talent work.

We thought we had been included as talents who would appear in scenes.

However, when we arrived and saw the lineup, we realized that many of the women with us were stunt performers. The work involved more physical action than we had originally expected.

That experience led me into stunt-related television work.

One of the productions I remember was Encantadia.

Our participation may have started as a brief or unexpected opportunity, but I eventually became more regularly involved in production work. I returned to taping, joined stunt scenes, and later received opportunities to work as a body double.

It is funny to remember because I was no longer undergoing formal stunt training at that time.

The industry was different then, and production teams were sometimes more flexible about accepting talents who could follow instructions, move well, and handle physically demanding scenes.

Because of my dance background, I could understand choreography, timing, body movement, positioning, and repetition. Those skills were useful in stunt and action scenes.

Around 2018, I was given opportunities to work as a body double.

One of the actresses I remember doubling for was Andi Eigenmann. I also doubled for other performers during that period, although some of the details have become difficult to remember because I worked on many productions and changed professional names.

You had to understand the scene, copy movements when necessary, match the position of the principal performer, and sometimes handle scenes requiring more physical work.

Even when the audience did not know who I was, I was still part of making the scene possible.

My schedule for Wildflower was commonly from Tuesday to Thursday.

At the same time, I was also working regularly on Encantadia, with taping schedules on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The schedules overlapped, but I continued working.

After those productions, I also became regularly involved in Mulawin and La Luna Sangre.

I accepted additional appearances in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, including bar scenes, press roles, and other supporting appearances.

There were moments when I moved from one taping location to another or accepted a smaller role between regular projects.

We commonly referred to these additional jobs as “segway”—another quick project, scene, or appearance squeezed into an already busy schedule.

Looking back, I sometimes ask myself how I managed to do all of that.

I did not fully appreciate my own determination back then.

Now, I can say, “Ang sipag ko pala talaga noon.”

Film Work and Star Cinema Productions

Aside from television, I also worked on film productions.

I joined several shoots connected with Star Cinema, where I was often positioned in frontal scenes or given small roles that placed me near the main actors.

Some roles had lines. Others required me to react, interact with the principal cast, or become part of an important scene.

Even when the role was small, I took it seriously.

I understood that being professional on set could lead to another call, another role, or a more regular opportunity.

That is one reason I continued receiving work.

I was willing to appear in different productions, whether the budget was large or limited. I did not demand that every role be prestigious.

I believed work was work, and every role was experience.

Newspaper Features, Contracts, and a Manager

Before I became pregnant around 2018, I had a manager who asked for my complete personal and professional details.

I signed a contract and submitted the information that was requested from me.

Those newspaper appearances happened around the same time that several bigger film opportunities were being discussed.

I never personally placed those details online, so I sometimes wonder whether my former manager, talent profiles, production documents, contracts, newspaper articles, and casting records were responsible for creating the identity Google now connects with me.

Maybe the internet was collecting pieces of my career without me realizing it.

The Film Opportunities That Never Happened

At one point in my career, I was being prepared for bigger opportunities.

There was a planned movie project titled Kolehiyala, where I was supposed to portray the sister of Glaiza de Castro.

I was also being considered for two movies in which I would play the lead role.

For someone who had spent years accepting different kinds of work, those opportunities could have marked a major turning point.

However, I became pregnant.

Instead of continuing with the projects, I stepped away and became less visible.

I chose to focus on my pregnancy and personal life.

Because of that decision, the planned movie roles did not continue for me.

Sometimes I think about what might have happened if the timing had been different. Perhaps those films would have opened more opportunities. Perhaps my career would have taken another direction.
